The cobra effect is a term used to describe a situation where a solution to a problem makes the problem worse. In the late 1800s, when India was under British control, the British government was concerned about the large number of poisonous cobras in Delhi. To solve the problem, they decided to offer a bounty for every dead cobra. However, this policy led some people to breed cobras to earn the bounty. Realizing this, the government stopped the bounty program. As a result, the cobra breeders released their now worthless snakes, leading to an increase in the cobra population. This event coined the term "the cobra effect".
